About Ian Carlson

Ian Carlson is a Christian author and Bible teacher devoted to helping people connect the transforming power of Jesus Christ to everyday life. As the author of more than 20 books on Christian living, his writing seeks to apply the spiritual truths of Scripture to the real struggles people face in a fallen world.
Ian was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, in a Christian home where church life and small group fellowship were central to family life. Yet like many families, his home was not without challenges. Through those experiences, God began shaping in Ian a deep conviction that the Gospel must not remain truth without transformation but must be applied to the real burdens and brokenness of life. The message of Christ is not only information to believe; it is power that transforms the heart and renews the mind.
Scripture reminds us that “the word of God is living and active” (Hebrews 4:12), and this conviction has become the driving force behind Ian’s writing and ministry.
Education and Calling
Ian pursued theological training through the Salvation Army’s two-year Bible Education program and later attended Columbia College, where he studied Project Management with a focus on leadership, eventually earning his MBA. He has also pursued doctoral studies in theology, which are currently on hold as he continues to serve in the ministries God has placed before him.
In addition to his writing ministry, Ian serves as a Staff Writer for GotQuestions.org, where he helps answer theological questions submitted from people around the world. His writing addresses topics such as:
- Biblical discipleship and spiritual growth.
- The authority and interpretation of Scripture.
- The nature of salvation and the Gospel.
- Practical Christian living and overcoming sin
Through this work, Ian has had the privilege of helping believers and seekers navigate difficult spiritual questions using the truth of God’s Word.
Ministry and Service
For more than two decades, Ian has been involved in various forms of Christian ministry. His heart is especially drawn toward helping people encounter the hope of the Gospel in difficult circumstances.
His ministry involvement includes:
- Prison ministry for over 20 years, encouraging men behind bars to pursue a transformed life in Christ.
- Men’s discipleship and leadership development within the local church.
- Mission work with Real Love Ministry in Haiti.
- Partnership with SunBeams Ministry in Uganda, helping equip leaders and teachers with biblical teaching resources
Ian spent more than ten years attending The Orchard Church in McHenry, Illinois, and now serves at Lighthouse Church in McHenry, where he continues to support discipleship and teaching ministries.
Sound Doctrine Studies
In 2022, Ian launched Sound Doctrine Studies, a ministry dedicated to helping believers grow deeper in their understanding of Scripture and their walk with Christ.
The mission of Sound Doctrine Studies is simple:
To connect the transforming power of Jesus Christ to everyday life through biblical teaching, writing, and discipleship resources.
Through books, devotionals, Bible studies, and online teaching, the ministry seeks to encourage believers to grow in spiritual maturity and remain anchored in sound doctrine.
Any profits or donations connected to this ministry are stewarded with a commitment to kingdom impact:
- 40% supports the Light House Church building fund
- 35% supports global missions
- 25% supports the continued work of the ministry
By God’s grace, these resources have already reached readers around the world, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Kenya, China, India, Germany, and Mexico.
A Commitment to the Word of God
Every page of this ministry is built upon a single conviction: God’s Word is true, and it changes lives.
The Bible is not a distant book written only for another time. It is God’s living message to humanity today.
2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”
Ian writes with the goal of helping readers see the God who sees them. His desire is not to draw attention to himself but to point people to Christ, who is the One whose grace restores the broken, whose promises never fail, and whose mercy is greater than our worst failures.
Whether someone is weary from life’s struggles, searching for hope, or longing to grow deeper in their relationship with Christ, the prayer behind this ministry is that every reader will be drawn closer to Him.
The truths shared here are not personal opinions or passing reflections. They are rooted in the unchanging authority of Scripture.
- Scripture is our compass.
- Christ is our message.
- The glory of God is our goal.
The Message of the Gospel
At the heart of the Bible is a story of redemption. God’s love for humanity is most clearly revealed in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
1 John 3:16 says, “By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us.”
The apostle Paul declared that this message is of “first importance” (1 Corinthians 15:3). Through Christ’s sacrifice, sinners are forgiven, hearts are transformed, and eternal life is offered to all who believe.
Personal Life
Ian came to know Jesus Christ as his Savior in 2001 after a life-altering experience in which he was near death and encountered the saving grace of Christ. Since that time, his life has been devoted to sharing the Gospel and helping others grow in their faith.
Ian lives in McHenry County, Illinois, with his wife Denise, to whom he has been married for more than 20 years. Together they have 2 grown children and 2 grandchildren who bring great joy to their family.
Outside of writing and ministry, Ian enjoys studying Scripture, spending time with his family, and continuing his long-standing involvement in prison ministry.
He also works professionally as a Quality Engineer, a role that allows him to serve both in his vocational career and in his call to ministry.
A Final Word
If you have found your way here, perhaps you are searching for encouragement, clarity, or truth.
Remember this:
The same God who spoke light into darkness can speak hope into your life today.
- You are known by Him.
- You are loved by Him.
- And through Christ, you are invited to walk with Him.
Psalm 34:8 says, “Taste and see that the LORD is good.”
