There are few things more dangerous than an enemy that cannot be easily identified. History is filled with examples of nations that fortified their borders, strengthened their armies, and prepared themselves for attacks from the outside, only to discover that the greatest threat had already infiltrated their ranks. The danger was not standing at the gate. The danger was already inside the walls.

The same reality exists within the church.

When most Christians think about threats to Christianity, they often think about persecution, secularism, atheism, or hostile governments. While those dangers certainly exist, the New Testament repeatedly warns that some of the greatest threats to the church come from within. False teachers, apostates, and spiritual deceivers frequently operate under the banner of Christianity. They use biblical language, claim spiritual authority, and often appear sincere. Yet beneath the surface, they are working against the very truth they claim to represent.

This is precisely why the book of Jude was written. Jude’s letter is short, but its message is powerful. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Jude sounds an alarm concerning a growing danger within the church. His concern is not primarily about attacks from pagan religions or unbelieving governments. His concern is about individuals who have infiltrated the visible church and are actively leading people away from the truth.

These men were not obvious enemies. They did not introduce themselves as opponents of Christianity. They did not openly reject the church. Instead, they quietly blended in among God’s people while secretly promoting error.

The church has faced this danger since its earliest days, and every generation must remain on guard.

The battle for truth began in the Garden

The battle Jude describes did not begin during the first century. It began in the Garden of Eden. When Satan approached Eve, he did not initially deny God’s existence. He did not launch an open attack against the Creator. Instead, he questioned God’s Word. Genesis 3:1 says, “Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God actually say, “You shall not eat of any tree in the garden”?’”

That simple question marked the beginning of humanity’s assault against divine truth. Satan understood that if he could undermine confidence in God’s Word, everything else would eventually collapse. His strategy has remained remarkably consistent throughout history. He continues to challenge God’s authority, distort God’s truth, and encourage people to trust their own wisdom rather than divine revelation.

The results of that first deception were catastrophic. Sin entered the world. Death followed. Humanity became separated from God. Every tragedy, every act of evil, and every form of suffering can ultimately be traced back to that moment when God’s truth was questioned and rejected.

Because truth is so important, it has always been under attack. False religions attack the truth. Cults attack the truth. Secular philosophies attack the truth. Yet some of the most dangerous attacks come from individuals who claim to uphold the truth while secretly corrupting it.

That is the enemy Jude confronts!
